What financial system can we put in place now, so that everyone has a chance to benefit from the latest life-saving medicine? Unequal access to life-saving treatments in the modern day is a well-documented phenomenon, everything from diabetes and antiretroviral medications are often bankrupting to individuals who rely on those medications. There are several solutions to the current inequality of access to medication. But the two most promising solutions to equalizing biomedical advancements are to 1. Open-source biomedical data to increase the rate of medical advancements. 2. Decentralize biomedical research so that the ownership of the latest medical research will belong to a collective rather than a few institutions. The Open Insulin Project, VitaDao, and the Tabula-Sapis Project are promising organizations that open-source or decentralize their biomedical research.

The Open-Insulin Project is an organization to notice. This is an organization that open-sources their work to serve those who depend on insulin to survive. Their mission statement is :” We envision a world in which communities in need have local sources of safe, affordable, high-quality insulin, and where people living with diabetes and their communities can own and govern the organizations that produce the medicine they depend on to survive.”. Their work is transparent and is accessible by anyone curious about open-sourcing biomedical data for a life-saving drug.
